Diving may be full of insatiable thrill-seekers, eagerly chasing down the next jaw-dropping moment underwater. But others appreciate the soothing effect of a more mellow, "anti-climactic" dive. For those looking for a laid-back getaway, here are four of our favorite spots.

Salt Pier, Bonaire
Piers are reliable structures for magnetizing marine life. But this one, with easy shore entry along Bonaire’s southwest coast and depths between 20 and 55 feet, is particularly mellow and beloved by underwater photographers. They gear up to shoot seahorses, banded coral shrimp, schooling grunts and the incredible play of sunlight filtering through the pier’s sponge-encrusted columns.

The Aquarium, Dominican Republic
Diving day trips from Bayahibe on the DR’s southeast coast often target the clear and shallow waters surrounding Catalina Island, where this aptly named dive site teems with clouds of reef fish (parrot fish, angel fish, trumpet fish, morays and more) in just 30 feet of water.

Los Islotes, La Paz, Baja California Sur
La Paz’s waters teem with whale sharks, turtles, rays and more. But for one of the most playful shallow dives in the Sea of Cortez, it’s hard to beat frolicking in just 15 feet of water among animated resident California sea lions.

Sand Key, Key West, Florida
Within a Sanctuary Preservation Area 7 miles west of Key West, this favorite shallow Florida Keys reef is the spot to see schooling yellowtail snapper, sea turtles and sometimes even eagle rays with a backdrop of the barrier reef’s classic spur-and-groove coral formations.
