Provided caption: The hard coral garden's of Melissa's Reef in the Penemu island group of Raja Ampat, Indonesia, expand as far as the eye can see. I had done nearly all of my diving to date in Hawaii and the Caribbean and there is nowhere I had been that I have witnesses such amazing color, life, and vibrancy. Coral covered every inch with colorful reef fish darting in and out and bright yellow jacks chasing them around the reef. Photographing hard coral gardens without an obvious focal point and trying to convey the vastness of the scene in front of me was quite challenging. I had thought I would give panorama photography a try, which I had not previously attempted underwater. I was so pleased with the result of this shot and its ability to convey scale that I shot dozens more 3-shot or more panoramas the rest of the trip and believe they are the best shots of my 2 weeks in Raja Ampat. I love the light in this shot and how the endless coral cover and schools of reef fish slightly in the distance perfectly align to the serenity and the sense of pure awe I felt while on this dive.
