Explorer Ventures'"Ventures into the Reef" Contest Winners Announced
Explorer Ventures announces the winners of "Ventures into the Reef," a series of competitions in recognition of "International Year of the Reef (IYOR 2008)." Explorer Ventures invited people to share their underwater adventures in celebration of the beauty and excitement that reefs provide to us. There were three categories in which people could participate; best underwater photo, best topside photo and best trip commentary.
The winners of each competition received a $500 credit towards a future trip on any Explorer Ventures vessel as well as receiving copies of the 2009 Explorer Ventures calendar which will showcase their winning entries. Runners up in the photo contests also received prizes.
Corinne Lutter of Alberta, Canada was our 'Trip Commentary' winner with her entry titled "You Never Forget Your First Time." A macro shot titled "Underwater Firefly," was awarded the "Best Underwater Photograph," taken by Julianne Ralph of Ontario, Canada. Garrett Grundman, of Long Beach, California was the winner of the 'Best Topside Photo' with his photograph titled "Bahamian Paradise." An underwater photograph titled "Yes, I'm Adorable," taken by Samantha Haebich of Australia and a topside shot titled "Sand Dollar Beach" taken by Pat Degenhardt of Alberta, Canada are the runners-up. Contest creator, Ariana Arcenas commented, "It was a very hard choice. I was amazed at the quality of photographs and commentaries submitted."

The first International Year of the Reef was designated in 1997 by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) in response to the idea that coral reefs were being subjected to increasing threats globally. The goal of the initiative was to increase awareness and understanding of coral reefs. The goals of IYOR 2008 continue with worldwide efforts of improving awareness and understanding of the critical role our reefs have upon the ecosystem.
