Geo-Quiz #2

The Mystery Destination is “Yap

  1. Yap, known as Wa’ab to the locals. Is made up of four main islands: Tamil, Gagil, Maap and Rumung and several out islands all part of the Caroline islands. Yap is one of the states in “Federated States of Micronesia”.
  2. Mantas have been the signature dive for years in Yap- with the height of the activity during the mating season of December and January. In recent years while the manta sightings continue to be a huge draw divers exploring the reefs have brought back stunning shark images. The island is also developing a following with ‘rumble’ or ‘muck’ diving that focuses on macro creatures.
  3. These dances are part of a story telling tradition that the whole village will often participate in. Yapese is based on a complex caste system with as many as seven ranks. The indigenous culture remains strong today, centered around the village. Remnants of traditional Yapese culture are common place- stone money, traditional attire; sailing canoes are often part of daily life for both locals and visitors.

Diving:

The encounters with the resident manta population are often timed with the height of the cleaning station activity, which is tidal dependant. Beyond manta diving the reef system is exceptionally healthy populated with over 200 species of hard and soft corals, many reef fish, and invertebrates. It is not unusual to see schools of huge Bumphead Parrotfish, Lionfish, and sleeping Whitetip reef sharks as you cruise the reef.

Even with 35+ named dive sites on around the main island some experts say nearly 50% of Yap’s dive sites have yet to be discovered.

  • Water temp averages: 82-84
  • Average visibility: 150-200 ft
  • High Season: Jan - May
  • Types of diving: drift, big animal (sharks and giant mantas), muck/rumble and reef.

Dive packages to Manta Ray Bay/Yap Divers start from $796 per diver and include 4 nights with 3 days diving (2 dives a day) NITROX available. For more information or to reserve a vacation of a lifetime CLICK HERE
