U.S. Coast Guard Rescues Sea Turtle Trapped in $53 Million Worth of Cocaine
The crew aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Thetis made a startling discovery when it spotted an entangled loggerhead sea turtle caught amid $53 million worth of cocaine.
The Coast Guard vessel was on a 68-day counter drug patrol in the Eastern Pacific when one of its crew members noticed a suspicious bundle floating in the ocean. That bundle included 1,800 pounds of cocaine and an endangered turtle.

The crew quickly worked to free the turtle, as shown in the Coast Guard video above. The Coast Guard reported that the turtle showed signs of chaffing around its neck and flipper, but was able to swim away into the Pacific.
Sea turtles are especially susceptible to entanglement in marine debris. Let this be a reminder that human debris has negative effects on marine life, no matter how valuable — or illegal — it may be.
