Hurricane Odile Cleanup Reveals New Dive Sites in Los Cabos

Adrian Stacey/Manta Scuba DivingDive shops Manta Scuba and Cabo Adventures joined forces for a cleanup dive at Pelican Rock and Land's End after Hurricane Odile.
After Hurricane Odile swept through the southern tip of Baja California just two weeks ago, the local dive community never expected to find such good news among the wreckage.
With repairs on land in the mends, the Manta Scuba Diving team — based out of Cabo San Lucas — turned their attention to possible damage under the water. Partnered with local dive centers, the team worked to clean up a few sites at the Cabo San Lucas marine park, including North Wall, Pelican Rock, Middle Wall and The Point, also known as Land’s End.
What they found: much of the sand had washed away from the dive sites, leaving most about 20 feet deeper. The result? New dive sites with before-unseen rocks and cracks for marine critters to hide. To cap it all off, Land’s end — a small shipwreck in Los Cabos that was previously buried by sheets of sand — was revealed.
Along with newly uncovered dive sites, schools of goat fish, pompanos, puffer fish, grouper fish, yellow snappers, bumphead parrotfish and grunts decorated the water. Green moray eels swam about in broad daylight, in about 83 degree-water. However, some beaches had been wiped away and visibility was lower than usual for the time of year, about 25 to 30 feet.
With the newly reborn dive sites and 85 pounds of debris extracted from the ocean, Manta Scuba Diving has fully recovered from Hurricane Odile.
With the municipality’s skeleton intact — Los Cabos International Airport, as well as most hotels and shops, have re-opened for business — all that’s missing is the heart of the operation, the people.
The divers and tourists who usually frequent Los Cabos are needed more than ever to help the area recover quickly, said Hagai Tzur, Manta manager and PADI scuba instructor.
“We got hit very hard by Hurricane Odile,” he said. “Fortunately, all our team is safe and we had only minor damages to our facility and boats, so we were very lucky!”
