A group of ocean lovers and certified scuba divers with a passion for the marine environment announced the founding of the National Marine Conservation Scholarship (NMCS) for high school seniors who are also certified scuba divers, as a way to ensure that the ocean environment is preserved for future generations.

Each year, starting with the high school class of 2014, the NMCS will award a $500 scholarship to three National Marine Conservation Scholars, along with naming up to 5 other Finalists and up to 10 other Semi‐Finalists.

Applicants will be judged on a combination of an essay; academic and scholastic achievements; extracurricular activities; and commitment to Scuba as measured by certification level and qualifications. The essay must be 400‐600 words, and the topic for the Class of 2014 is: “How has my experience with Scuba increased my interest in / awareness of / or commitment to marine conservation?"

By providing scholarships to high school seniors who are also certified Scuba divers, it is the goal of NMCS to enable young scholars to continue to dive, study, and preserve the marine environment with passion, as “a gift from an our generation to the next generation,” according to group members who prefer to remain anonymous.

Applicants must be high school students graduating in the class of 2014 who are also certified scuba divers by either PADI or NAUI. Applications must be received by September 15, 2013, and winners will be announced by October 15, 2013.
