Divevolk SeaTouch: ScubaLab Best Buy

ScubaLab tested six underwater smartphone housings in a head-to-head evaluation. The Divolk SeaTouch 4 Max is our Best Buy for 2024.

Housings were evaluated by a team of test divers using an iPhone XR and iPhone 14 Pro. Divers scored each housing in several performance categories including build quality, ease of setup, ergonomics and intuitiveness of operation. The SeaTouch housing uses a soft, flexible membrane on the back that allows for full touchscreen control of the user’s smartphone up to 196 feet.

Divers can use the phone’s native camera app (or any camera app of their choosing) and access settings like zoom, burst, live photo and RAW capture just like they can on land. No dedicated housing app, Bluetooth connection or battery is required for use. Simply place the phone into the inner plastic tray, slide the tray into the housing, and secure the two thumbscrews. Another great feature is that the user can capture, review, edit and share media without removing the phone from the housing.

Adapters are included for various models of iPhone 12, 13 and 14. Other models will require the purchase of a customized adapter or some jerry-rigging to ensure a snug, secure fit. A travel case is not included but care should be used to protect the sensitive membrane during travel and storage.

The SeaTouch 4 Max scored excellent for intuitive operation, as the phone inside can be used just like it would be used on land. The only exception is that users will need to enable the device’s adaptive touch control to use operations that normally require physical button presses, like locking the device screen. Phone battery is also similar to what one would normally expect of the device.

The housing is very slim except for its right-hand grip, and super lightweight. It is comfortable and natural to hold in the hand. Additional accessories are required to use the housing with a tray, color filters, wet lenses and imaging lights. There is also a Wi-Fi signal transmitter accessory, which can connect the phone to a camera for use as an external monitor.

Test divers felt the housing had uses even beyond imaging: Easily reference site maps, collect notes and scientific data, watch movies during extended decompression stops, communicate via text and calls at the surface—the possibilities are endless.

Super compact, this travel-friendly housing offers streamlined imaging capabilities and versatile functionality for diving and other watersports. Super simple to operate with boundless potential, the SeaTouch 4 Max was a favorite of several test divers. It is our 2024 Best Buy for underwater smartphone housings.
