A monumental dream is coming to life in the waters off Cancun and Isla de Mujeres. The first three pieces in sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor's latest underwater sculpture park have been positioned in the new Cancun Underwater Museum. Two hundred more life-size, PH-neutral concrete figures will be added to the underwater sculpture park in June. Coral already is thriving on the Cancun Underwater Museum's Man on Fire, which has 75 holes planted with fire coral and was placed in a shallow, storm-damaged area of Cancun's National Marine Park in November, along with The Archive of Lost Dreams and The Gardener of Hope. Phase two of the Cancun Underwater Museum is under way, with 100 pieces for The Silent Evolution an artificial reef modeled by members of the local community nearing completion. In Phase three of the underwater sculpture park, other artists will contribute to the museum, which should include 400 sculptures by the end of the year. Diving the museum will be almost like an archeological discovery, says Taylor, who learned to scuba dive after graduating from art school. His goal is to highlight how stunning our underwater world is, and how we should look after it better. The project is all about conservation.
