Fantasy Island - Diving Good, Resort OK
Just returned from FI last week. I liked the additional option (beyond the daily scheduled boat dives) of shore-diving from the FI gazebo. Just a few kicks to a wreck, sunken airplane, and decent wall dive... Though the water tended to get stirred up in this area due to current, boat traffic and diver traffic.
Was a bit disappointed that we didn't see anything larger than a filefish except on the shark dive when they are baited in. No mantas, no sting rays, and no turtles. But the macro world was great with seahorses, blennies, and lots of corals / gorgonians. And lots of octopus at night. And we had an interesting dive when a remora took a liking to one of our group and tried swimming up his trunks... Another reason why I'd recommend a wet suit. :) The shark dive is a must, especially for anyone (like me) that has never seen a shark before. It is amazingly non-scary even though the idea may make your heart pound. It is well organized and an amazing experience. One girl with us even said the night dive (her second) was more scary than the shark dive.
Topside the food was OK but my group was pretty bored with the menu after the first 4 days. We ended up taking a taxi to West End for dinner at Eagle Rays, which was great food at a decent price. The shops in West End are also fun to browse and reasonably priced. I'd stay out of Coxen Hole.
The resort was very clean, the staff friendly but service was extremely slow. You were lucky to get one drink during happy hour even when the bar wasn't that crowded. We had no problems with theft and left our laptop out in plain view during the day while diving.
