This month's Geo-quiz is brought to you by: El Secreto Belize

El Secreto Belize

The mystery destination is:

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Clue #1: This is the largest island of Belize, located northeast of the country in the Caribbean Sea.

Belize’s three major atolls are surrounded by miles of spectacular reefs that encompass an array of pristine palm-fringed beaches washed by the tepid azure waters of the Caribbean Sea. The atolls’ sheltered waters are home to a cornucopia of marine life, unspoiled reefs with an abundance of rare soft corals, and flamboyant multi-colored sponges. The island is about 25 miles long from north to south, and about 1 mile wide.

Ambergris Caye

Clue #2: It was the home to Mayan people in Pre-Columbian times.

Excavations of distinctive red pottery at archaeological sites around the island point to a community of Maya that occupied the island area, a place rich in sea life as well as a strategic location for maritime trade and travel. Evidence suggests that this community thrived into the 13th century -- well after the general collapse of the Maya. Today, visitors can see the remnants of this civilization in various ruins across the island.

Lamanai Mayan Ruins

Clue #3: It is located near a 1,000-foot circular coral reef that drops 400 feet into an incredible cavern filled with stalactites and awe-inspiring natural formations.

The "Great Blue Hole" is a large submarine sinkhole that is located near the center of Lighthouse Reef, about 43 miles from the mainland of Belize. it is one of the most recognizable dive sites in the world, made famous by the great diver Jacques-Yves Cousteau in the early 1970s and frequented by thousands of visitors each year. Here, divers can experience crystal-clear water and view a variety of marine life including giant groupers, nurse sharks and several types of reef sharks such as the Caribbean reef shark and blacktip shark. Occasionally, divers will also see hammerheads and bull sharks, though this is less common. Underwater rock formations such as stalactites and submerged caves also entice divers to this unique environment.
