The mystery destination is: Roatan, Bay Islands Honduras

Clue #1: This island is located near the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef in the world.

Perhaps no island offers more distinctive or easily accessible Caribbean diving sites than Roatan. Many of Roatan’s dive sites are located within a short boat ride from Anthony’s Key Resort – in fact some are just a short swim from the beach of Anthony’s Key. With approximately 30 dive sites located from West Bay in the south to Man of War Cay, Anthony’s Key Resort is conveniently located in the middle. The island’s reefs and drop-offs are teeming with colorful marine life and are ideally suited for novices and experts alike. Surrounded by the longest barrier reef in the hemisphere, Roatan’s diving sites offer everything from hard-core wrecks and deep fissures to peaceful eel gardens and shallow terraces where countless macro photo opportunities abound. Coral grows thickly on walls that begin in crystalline waters as shallow as 20 feet below the surface and drop to the purple depths of the Caribbean. Squadrons of eagle ray, schools of brightly colored tropical fish, and the occasional meandering shark are just a few of the Roatan scuba sites that delight divers. Several large wrecks submerged near the resort, await exploration. With water temperatures averaging 80 degrees or warmer, gentle currents and visibility ranging from 50 to 100 feet, Roatan is a favorite among visitors who prefer their diving colorful, thrilling and unswerving.

Clue #2: It was once inhabited by indigenous peoples believe to be related to the Maya, Lencas and the Miskitos, the cultures present on the mainland.

Pre-Columbian Honduras was home to at least six known groups, including the advanced Maya, the Lencas and the Miskitos. The Maya were dominant on the mainland of Honduras, where their ruins can still be found. Honduras’ history changed when Columbus explored the area in 1502. While the Spanish settled the region, both the Spanish and the English fought for dominance in the region for several centuries. In 1821 Honduras, Mexico and three other Central American nations declared its independence from Spain. In 1838, Honduras left this federation and became independent.

Clue #3: This destination features a Dolphin Encounter Experience at the local Institute of Marine Sciences.

From the Anthony’s Key dock, you will be taken to Bailey's Key for a top-side orientation and Q&A session to learn about diving etiquette with the dolphins. Next, a five minute boat ride will take you to a beautiful reef wall where you'll descend to a white sand bottom at a depth of 60 feet, where two or three naturally curious dolphins arrive and are free to interact with you as they choose. In this unstructured dive, the complexities of the dolphins’ relationships and communication are revealed as you spend 45 minutes, observing, photographing and playing with the dolphins in the open ocean. These dives are limited to a small group of divers who are accompanied by a dolphin behaviorist dive guide and videographer. Certification card is required to participate.
