Scott’s Head Pinnacle is a popular seamount just off the Scott’s Head promontory on Dominica’s southwestern tip where the island’s coast cups the sparkling waters of Soufrière Bay. You are amidst a stunning vista of land and sea as you giant stride off the dive boat. Our small group of divers begin by exploring several arches and swim-throughs on our way to the pinnacle’s most spectacular archway: two huge granite boulders that lean against each other to form an enchanting grotto. It’s a breathtaking formation—dramatic, beautiful and unforgettable. Underwater, Dominica’s reefscape mirrors the towering mountains and plunging cliffs found on land. Every place you visit on a vacation on this Eastern Caribbean island is a gift of nature—both underwater and topside—and all of it will leave you awestruck.

When you stay at the Fort Young Hotel Dominica in Roseau, you are in the best location for experiencing the island’s natural beauty. The historic boutique hotel is your basecamp for all things diving (it’s just a short boat ride from the hotel’s dock to the island’s most famous dive sites and the marine reserve, plus there’s a delightful shore-accessible house reef) and the many land-based activities. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Roseau, Dominica’s colorful capital city, Fort Young Hotel is the ultimate haven for scuba divers who want an extraordinary and unique dive vacation. The hotel seamlessly blends historic charm with modern luxury, and as your gateway to the underwater wonders of Dominica, Fort Young Hotel promises not only a luxurious stay but also unparalleled access to the island’s diverse dive sites.

Discover the Fort Young Hotel Difference: The Diving

Fort Young Hotel is the only all-inclusive property on the island to have an onsite dive operation, Fort Young Dive, which ensures easy access to Dominica’s most spectacular dive sites. Fort Young Dive’s professional dive staff can’t wait to show you what each one offers.

If you love dramatic underwater formations, you’ll love the Soufriere-Scott’s Head Marine Reserve. In addition to Scott’s Head Pinnacle, the bay is an underwater playground of coral pillars and fascinating marine life, such as flying gurnards, spotted eagle rays and turtles. Champagne Reef is a shallow geothermal site that is evidence of the ancient volcanic activity that shaped the island. You may not think there’s anything to see on the sand bottom, but soon your divemaster will point out the “champagne bubbles” of the underwater hot-water spring that gives the site its name. You might also get to “toast” frogfish, squid and lobster.

Divers underwater

With vibrant marine life, rugged pinnacles and drop-offs, Dominica is a true paradise for divers.

Located on the central part of the island’s west coast, Nose Reef is an entertaining site that has three protruding ledges that resemble—you guessed it!—a nose. Both beginner and advanced divers will find plenty to discover, in depths ranging from 40 to 120 feet. Colorful sponges abound and sea turtles often cruise by. Beginner divers can stay on top of the dropoff, while more advanced divers can drop down over the edge to explore deeper.

Pole to Pole is a unique experience found on the island’s north end. You’ll dive beneath the Cabrits Cruise ship jetty where the poles are decorated with seahorses, shrimp and crabs, and on the seafloor, batfish, flying gurnards and garden eels enthrall you. If you’re an underwater photographer, don’t forget your macro lens: at Pole to Pole, you will be in a weird and wonderful world of unusual sea critters.

The dive operation’s dive boats—Formidable, which takes a maximum of 32 divers, and Zélé, which can take up to 19 divers—have a spacious deck, a covered area offering shade, dry storage, freshwater shower and large rinse buckets. Special charters are available upon request. The dive shop is adding another boat later this year. Other recent upgrades include a revamped jetty, expanded dive shop, enhanced gear rooms and the island’s only fully equipped training and photo room, all designed to make your diving an enjoyable and easy experience.

From the moment you arrive, the Fort Young Hotel staff caters to the needs of guests and divers. The dive operation is staffed by professionals and offers state-of-the-art equipment. The team maintains rigorous safety standards, with all equipment maintained to international standards and all staff trained and certified to ensure a safe diving environment. The dive staff is also dedicated to environmental conservation, adhering to sustainable diving practices, including responsible diver behavior, reef-friendly protocols and proper waste disposal—all to minimize the impact on the island’s marine ecosystem.

Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner, the Fort Young team is ready to offer any additional training you or someone in your group is interested in. The dive staff pros offer PADI training and certifications from Discover Scuba to Advanced Open Water. Universal referrals are accepted.

Discover the Fort Young Hotel Difference: Land-based Adventures

You can’t have a dive vacation in Dominica—known as “the nature island of the Caribbean”— without embarking on at least one land-based adventure. You can experience the multifaceted culture of Roseau, from its markets and restaurants to the nearby Botanical Gardens. Within a short drive, discover the wonders of the Roseau Valley, home to Trafalgar Falls, Middleham Falls and the iconic Boiling Lake. In addition to chasing the splendors of the island’s waterfalls, you can also sign up for whale-watching (these waters are home to sperm whales as well as dolphins), fishing, birdwatching and hiking expeditions.
