Divetech Offers Expedition To Cayman's Lost Island

Go scuba diving where few have gone before. Divetech's upcoming expedition will allow divers to explore Cayman's mysterious "fourth island."

About 7 miles west of Grand Cayman is a pristine reef sitting about 90-100 feet below the surface. This isolated coral bank is a continuation of the undersea mountain range that rises up from depths of over 25,000 feet and is sometimes referred to as the fourth Cayman island. It is inaccessible to most scuba divers due to depth and distance, but next August Divetech is taking a few lucky tech-divers on an expedition to the lost Cayman Island.

“Divetech is always looking for new and exciting adventures for our clients,” said General Manager Tony Land, who led the initial exploratory dive trip to the banks last year. “12-mile is unique in that it is remote and seldom explored. Our divers were probably among the first humans to lay eyes on sections of those walls. There aren’t many places you can do that in the world anymore, especially this close to civilization.”

Curt Bowen, the CEO of Advanced Diver Magazine and board member of the ADM Exploration Foundation, will be documenting the expedition.

While other dive operators occasionally run trips to the 12-mile bank, they are typically confined to recreational limits. Divetech’s technical dive profiles allow advanced divers to explore the uncharted depths of 250 feet.

“We support groups with conservation efforts and exploration of the ocean,” said Land, who is thrilled and inspired by the pristine nature of the reef. “The top of the bank is filled with living coral heads that rise to 50 feet from the surface and abound with turtles, sharks, reef fish, and pelagics, like wahoo and grouper. The area is virtually unexplored!”

The 7 day expedition will run from August 19-26, 2016. Click here for more information.
