Video: Escape Under the Ice with Freediver Johanna Nordblad

Immerse yourself in the bleak and beautiful world under the ice in this short documentary by British director and photographer Ian Derry.

In Johanna Under the Ice Derry paints a portrait of Finnish freediver Johanna Nordblad.

Nordblad came to the sport while recovering from a terrible downhill biking accident. In order to save her leg from necrosis she underwent cold water treatment.

“At first the cold was agony, but slowly I got used to the feeling,” says Nordblad about her recovery.

Her apperception for the cold led her to adventure underneath the frozen lakes of her homeland and Derry was drawn to her story of recovering from a terrible injury in such an extreme way.

“Once I had met her and gone to the location — which at this point was -24 degrees Celsius (-11 Fahrenheit) I knew I had to make the film. The environment and the silence there is something I will never forget,” Derry told Nowness.

Nordblad currently holds the world record for a 50-meter (164-foot) dive under the ice while wearing only a swimsuit. She will attempt to break her own record next year on March 18.
