Greater Fort Lauderdale: Dive Right In

Greater Fort Lauderdale features a unique, multi-tiered natural reef system beginning as shallow as 20 feet with some as close as 100 yards offshore at its closest point and stretching nearly 70 miles. More than 80 wrecks and artificial reefs can be found along the 23 miles of golden shores. Whether a beginner or an expert, it won't take long to discover why the destination is tops for diving. Dozens of dive shops offer lessons for those less seasoned divers and all provide rental equipment. Topside shopping, eateries, and an active arts and entertainment scene complete the dive adventure.

Some of the most popular sites in the destination include Barracuda Reef, a steep diving ledge on the inside of the reef at Dania Beach; Copenhagen Wreck, a 325-foot steel hull that is a State Marine Archaeological Preserve; and Hog Heaven, an upside down barge 50 feet down that is home to a number of marine wildlife.

As the "wreck capital of the U.S., much of Greater Fort Lauderdale's recognition as one of the world's outstanding dive destinations is the result of special events such as the Ocean Fest Dive & Adventure Sports Expo, highlighted by dive-related exhibitors, live entertainment, giveaway prizes and dive seminars on a variety of topics. Each year, the event attracts thousands of dive enthusiasts in April.
