Scuba Diving App: Fish Flip

Fish Flip: Flashcards of Amazing Fish

Version:1.1

Price: $0.99

Platform: iPhone, iPod, iPad

Description: Fish Flip: Flashcards of Amazing fish is a learning game similar to flashcards — remember 3rd grade? — with a progress-tracking system.

Pros: A pretty impressive library of both salt and freshwater fish.

Cons: Very basic interface, and you always win.

Bottom Line: The version tested had 157 different images of fish that look like they were submitted by divers from around the world (the images were from Wikimedia Commons). Very easy to use, but the interface needs a lot of work. I’ve also found what I consider to be a serious flaw in the app: As a flash card it’s great; as a game, it’s broken. The app shows you a picture of a fish and asks you if the name on the screen matches the image. Every flash card on the game gives you the correct answer, so if you say yes, you always win with a perfect score. You can beat the entire game in about 1 minute. Also, if you click the wrong name for some reason, it will not tell you the correct name. For the price this is good only as a flash card.
