As divers around the world are giant-striding into 2026, it’s an ideal time to set positive intentions for the year ahead. If you’re looking for some inspiration and guidance, look no further than Szilvia Gogh. Szilvia is truly a woman of many talents and achievements, despite encountering no shortage of obstacles. Her life’s journey is sure to motivate anyone looking to dive into their dreams.

From humble beginnings in land-locked, communist Hungary, at the age of 26, Szilvia became the youngest female PADI Course Director in the world in 2002.

“When I set my intention to become a PADI Course Director, I had no money and every obstacle seemed designed to stop me,” she says. “But I held onto one powerful vision: becoming a supportive, encouraging instructor who helps others believe in their own dreams—above and below the water.”

Behind the Silver Screen

Eventually, Szilvia made her way from Hungary to California. While working at a dive shop in Burbank, she found herself in an interesting catch-22 situation. The dive shop, located right next to all the major Hollywood studios, was the go-to place for productions needing dive equipment and training. Even though Szilvia was able to train some of the biggest names in the industry, she wasn’t able to actually work on movie sets because she wasn’t a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

“To get your SAG card, you need to work three days on a SAG production—but you can only work on SAG productions if you already have your SAG card,” she says. “I had logged thousands of dives and was the perfect size for doubling female actors, but I was stuck on the outside looking in.”

Her “big break” finally came thanks to pure endurance and refusing to quit. On the set of a deodorant commercial where 50 women in bikinis were supposed to swim through the freezing Pacific Ocean, only Szilvia and one other woman made it through to the end of the day. When someone performs something extraordinary that no existing SAG member can do, they qualify for immediate membership.

“After years of watching others live my dream of being a stuntwomen, I earned my SAG card floating in the Pacific in a blue bikini, half-dead from cold but very much alive with possibility,” Szilvia says.

With her SAG card finally in hand, Szilvia used her incredible skills and fearless spirit to become a professional stunt diver. To date, she has worked as an underwater stunt performer and water safety diver in more than 27 films, including the second and third Avatar movies.

She has worked to create safe and groundbreaking underwater scenes come to life alongside actresses like Kate Winslet, Sigourney Weaver and Zoe Saldaña, and she even served as Drew Barrymore’s stunt double, shooting scenes with a giant CGI whale.

“I love the constant adaptability. Movie shoots are in flux—directions shift rapidly and scenes change on a dime,” Szilvia says. “I've learned that whether you're 60 feet underwater or 60 feet in the air, success comes from preparation, precision and an unwavering belief in yourself.”

The Ultimate Test of Strength

Szilvia’s strength was put to the test in 2015, shortly after the birth of her son. She was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy, total hysterectomy and chemotherapy.

“Going through cancer taught me that our time is precious and finite, so we'd better spend it doing what sets our souls on fire,” she says.

While bravely battling cancer, losing all her hair and being a new mom, Szilvia still found ways to connect with the ocean and diving.

“Surviving cancer taught me that life doesn't wait for the ‘perfect moment’ and neither should your dreams,” she says. “The ‘what ifs’ that used to hold me back—What if I fail? What if I'm not good enough?—became meaningless compared to the real question: What if I don't even try? Two years after my diagnosis, when I was still rebuilding my strength and my life, I got the call to work on Avatar. My first feeling was doubt—was I strong enough? But then I realized: I just survived cancer. I can handle anything.”

Ocean-Inspired Passion

When she’s not diving in the ocean or working on a movie set, Szilvia can be found at her workbench, creating her own ocean-inspired and sustainable jewelry line—Gogh Jewelry Design.

“The ocean is my happy place. It's where I feel most alive, most free, most myself. When I'm designing jewelry, I'm channeling that same feeling—that weightless freedom, that sense of endless possibility,” she says.

Her handmade pieces reflect her passion for the underwater world, her love for travel and her positive outlook on life. Many of her designs feature ocean elements like wave patterns, sea turtle charms and fossilized shark teeth. There are also often mantras and words of affirmation featured on the jewelry she designs.

“The jewelry is my love letter to the ocean and to that ‘dive into your dreams’ philosophy. These aren't just accessories; they're reminders to live life to the fullest and to stay connected to what makes you feel alive,” Szilvia says.

A Life Filled with Gratitude

From teaching people to scuba dive as a PADI Course Director to making movie magic on underwater film sets to crafting a successful ocean-inspired jewelry business, Szilvia has had no shortage of success in life. But she doesn’t take any of it for granted. In fact, she attributes much of her success and her mental fortitude to scuba diving.

In addition to providing Szilvia with numerous career paths, being a scuba diver has shaped Szilvia’s mentality as she’s navigated life’s ups and downs. Scuba diving has fundamentally helped her to lead not only an extraordinary life, but a life filled with positivity and gratitude.

“Diving showed me that the best things aren't fought for—they're experienced by flowing with the currents, by being present and by embracing the journey with gratitude. That underwater peace, that absolute freedom, gave me a foundation of positivity that no adversity could shake,” she says.

Setting Positive Intentions

When asked if she has any advice for divers looking to set positive intentions (and actually achieve their goals despite any adversity they may face), Szilvia was overjoyed. In addition to the wide variety of roles she plays, she jumps at the opportunity to share what she’s learned with others.

“The secret isn't avoiding adversity; it's about not letting it define you. Cancer couldn't stop me from returning to diving, stunts and Avatar. Financial struggles couldn't stop me from becoming a PADI Course Director. Your obstacles are proof that you're on a journey few are willing to take. So set your intention. Hold it close. And when doubt creeps in, remember: It's never too late to start diving into your dreams.”
