VIDEO: Freediver Attempts Underwater Yoga Record

Focusing on the breath is an integral part of both yoga and freediving. One Russian diver recently combined both practices to attempt the world record for the longest underwater yoga pose.

Actress, model and freediver Marina Kazankova set out to set the record just before Christmas at the Y-40 pool, the world’s deepest swimming pool, located in Padua, Italy.

Kazankova started with a goal to hold the bridge pose for three minutes, but she ended up exceeding that time, staying in position for four minutes and 28 seconds as her father, daughter and freediving students cheered her on.

The 38-year-old has attempted — and broken — one Guinness record per year since 2016.

In 2016, Kazankova broke the record for longest distance swam underwater with one breath (open water, female, with fins), swimming an impressive 154 meters, or just over 505 feet. The next year, she achieved the longest underwater walk on one breath, trekking 69.4 meters, or almost 228 feet, through the Dubai Mall aquarium. And in 2018, she performed the longest underwater dance by a couple, a 3-minute and 28-second choreographed routine, with fellow freediver Dmitrijs Malasenko.

“Being a World Champion means having the responsibility of inspiring people to live their lives fully and to be happy and healthy,” Kazankova says in a blog post. “I want to show people that our dreams come true if we are courageous enough to dream and to go for the realization of our dreams!”

Her underwater yoga record is currently being reviewed by Guinness Book of World Records. There is currently no Guinness record for the feat.
