What It's Like to Scuba Dive with a Whale Shark in Florida

Keith and Brittany Brock, and their niece Addie Edwards, along with Pura Vida Divers dive guide Craig Buss, were the last ones in the water when a whale shark graced them with its presence.

We were diving a dive site known as "The Trench" just a few hundred yards off the beach in West Palm. Pura Vida Divers allows you to do 60-minute drift dives, and my wife Brittany, our 13-year-old niece Addie Edwards, and I were the last three divers left with the divemaster, Craig Buss. At about 56 minutes into the dive Craig got our attention and motioned for us to end the dive and head to the surface. We started slowly ascending, and when we reached 30 feet or so, I looked off to my right and noticed what looked like an immense cloud. I kept staring at it for a few more seconds and then noticed several cobia. I checked to see where our niece was because I immediately thought the cobia were with a few bull sharks and I knew she might panic (she has fewer than 20 dives). She was right in between my wife, and I knew she would feel safe. When I looked back, I realized that "the cloud" was a harmless, massive, whale shark! I screamed as loud as I could to get Brittany and Addie's attention, and then the four of us got to spend about 1 minute or so with the beautiful gentle giant. It was the experience of a lifetime for us! My wife has close to 200 dives and I have around 250, and we've done some great diving, including the nighttime manta ray dive in Kona, Hawaii. Don't get me wrong, that is one of the rock shows of scuba diving — all those lights underwater and on the surface and the manta rays performing is breathtaking — but you "expect it." This whale shark encounter was pure and natural and completely unexpected. We scuba divers are so lucky to witness the other 70 percent of God's creation, and I hope this video helps people understand that and leads to more people scuba diving!
