5 Underwater-Themed Horror Flicks for the B-Movie Buff

The ocean has long been a source of inspiration for terror — think Jaws, the Kraken and more. It makes sense. The ocean is mostly unexplored, so creative imaginations run wild when they consider what could be harbored in the deep. We divers know better from experience; it is a pretty magical place, after all.

Some horror flicks opt for a more realistic approach — potentially steering people away from scuba diving in the case of 47 Meters Down and perpetuating an unhealthy fear of sharks in the case of Jaws — but some take a more absurd angle. Here are five wacky, B-rated fright fests that may provide some entertainment come Halloween time for the underwater enthusiast.

Warning: If you're allergic to all things gory or scary, these trailers may not be for you.

Sharknado

As the poster for this low-budget movie so eloquently puts its, “Sharknado … Enough said!” It’s the curiosity of seeing just exactly how those two things could be fused and stretched out into an 85-minute feature that drove millions of people to watch on Syfy. This movie become a bit of a pop culture sensation for its absurdity, including scenes that feature a man diving face first into a shark’s open mouth with chainsaw in hand and many others fearlessly firing bullets into a tornado. For the record: We at Sport Diver highly discourage both activities and are proud to report that no sharks were harmed during the creation of this film.

Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys

Due to their parasitic behavior and frightening looks, lampreys — a relative of the hagfish found in temperate regions — have inspired many movie monsters. In the horror film Blood Lake, they terrorized residents of a small town by swimming up plumbing to attack from toilets and showers.

Sharktopus

Two of many divers’ favorite creatures — a shark and an octopus — get engineered together to create a U.S. Navy weapon in this campy B-movie. Better yet, two sequels see sharktopus do battle with a pteracuda and a whalewolf.

Frankenfish

This story of genetically engineered snakehead fish attacking people in the Louisiana bayou is based on the real-life introduction of snakehead fish into U.S. waters, where they are a destructive invasive species.

The Sea Beast

The titular monster of this horror flick has a head and jaws inspired by real-life predators of the deep ocean, such as anglerfish. Of course, the real-world version isn’t connected to a manlike body, and they rarely rise from the depths to hunt on land with Predator-like powers of invisibility.
